In recovery we begin to learn how to manage our lives, we go from unmanageability to manageability. Once of the most important ways to manage your life is to manage your time in recovery. The next step in how to manage your time in recovery is to look at what parts of your life that is absolutely fundamental to you. Write a list of ten basic areas where you spend the most of your time. For example here is a list of basic things in your life which are not in order of importance:

  • Personal time

  • Physical needs

Based on what you have been recording every day throughout the week about how you now spend your time, break it down and put it into categories. Use the categories on your list of fundamental areas and designate each activity you have recorded to one of them. For instance:

  • Financial support would include going to work and submitting applications
  • Entertainment would include watching tv and reading
  • Extracurricular would include playing tennis and writing poetry

You get the point. Once you have found a place for everything you do during the week take a look at it. Decide whether or not you are managing your time effectively. Are you focused way too much on one area of your life such as personal time? Which part of your life is keeping you from living a balanced and managed life? Do you waste time you could use elsewhere doing activities that don’t necessarily benefit you in anyway? This is the way you can begin to manage your time in recovery. Find out what is important and begin to look at whether or not you spend as much time in those important areas as you can.

From this point you can formulate goals to put more time into the areas which don’t have enough and put less time into the areas that have too much. The point is to find a balance between all important areas of your life. The list is going to help you do that. Always try to keep track of the amount of time you spend in each area and if you can cut back or add time to any of those areas.
